Frequently Asked Questions

What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based indirect tax applied throughout India on the supply of goods and services. It replaced multiple cascading taxes levied by the central and state governments.

What is CGST, SGST, and IGST?

CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax): The portion of the tax collected by the Central Government on an intra-state sale (within the same state).

SGST (State Goods and Services Tax): The portion of the tax collected by the State Government on an intra-state sale.

IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax): The tax collected entirely by the Central Government for inter-state sales (between two different states).

What is the difference between them?

The main difference depends on the location of the buyer and seller. If a seller in Telangana sells to a buyer in Telangana (Intra-state), the total GST rate is split equally into CGST + SGST. If that same seller sells to a buyer in Karnataka (Inter-state), the full tax amount is charged as a single IGST.

What is Inclusive vs Exclusive GST?

Exclusive GST: The tax is added on top of the base price. (e.g., A ₹100 product + 18% GST = ₹118 Total).

Inclusive GST: The tax is already built into the final price. (e.g., A ₹118 total price at 18% GST means the base product is ₹100, and the tax portion is ₹18).

What are the current GST tax slabs in India?

The primary GST slabs in India are currently set at 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. There are also special rates of 0.25%, 1.5%, and 3% for specific goods like precious stones and gold. Our calculator allows you to select standard rates or simply type in a custom rate.

How do I calculate GST manually?

To Add GST (Exclusive):
GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) ÷ 100.

To Remove GST (Inclusive):
GST Amount = Total Price - [Total Price ÷ (1 + (GST Rate ÷ 100))].

Who needs to register for GST (GSTIN)?

In general, businesses whose aggregate turnover in a financial year exceeds ₹40 Lakhs for goods (₹20 Lakhs in special category states) or ₹20 Lakhs for services (₹10 Lakhs in special category states) are required to register for GST and obtain a 15-digit GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number).
